The chronicles of England reveal early records of the name Chadwick as a Norman surname which ranks as one of the oldest. The Vikings landed in Northern Scotland about the year 870 A.D. under their Chief Stirgud the Stout. Later Thorfinn Rollo became the first Duke of Normandy. Duke William who invaded and defeated England in 1066 was descended from the first Duke Rollo of Normandy.
The surname Chadwick emerged as a notable English family name of great antiquity. They were descended from the Archbishop of Rheims and finally settled in Chadwick in Spotland. The history of the name is interwoven into the colourful fabric as an intrinsic part of the history of Britain. Ancient manuscripts as the Domesday Book, compiled in 1086 by William the Conqueror show the first record of the name in Staffordshire where they were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy for their distinguished assistance at the battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. A family name capable of being traced back to this document, was a signal of honour for families during the middle ages, and even to this day.
The surname Chadwick contributed much to local politics and in the affairs of England and Scotland where branches of the family moved following Earl David of Huntingdon who would later become King of Scotland.
Later in the 16th , 17th and 18th centuries, England and Scotland were ravaged by religious and political conflict. The unrest caused many families to think of distant lands and many sailed aboard the fleet of ships known as the "White Sails".
In the 1600 the news of attractions of the New World spread like wildfire. While some Chadwick families headed for North America, Thomas Chadwick, descendant of Sir John Chadwick´s from Oxford (1756) chose South America and settled in 1820 in La Serena, Chile, attracted by news of good opportunities in the mining industry in this yet virgin part of the world, giving birth to the Chadwick family in Chile.
The Chadwick family soon became active members of their community and a respected family in the Chilean society.
In 1909 Alejandro Chadwick Ortuzar, grandson of Thomas, married Leonor Errázuriz, giving birth to the Chadwick - Errázuriz family of which the late Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz (1914-1993) was the father of Eduardo Chadwick, today President of Vińa Errázuriz. |
